Chapter 11

Ash

I wake up to one of my absolute favourite sights - a peaceful Tess sleeping on my chest. Without the weight of the world, she looks so calm - not a crinkle around her eyes and her beautiful pink lips slightly upturned. Tess carries a lot every day, and I feel awful that some of it is because of us. Our girl is so sweet, she shouldn’t have to be bothered with the demons of our world or the ones that life has thrown her way.

Tess sighs as she curls up a bit further, throwing her top leg over mine. My cock is pretty much always at least a little bit hard around her, but it’s really having a moment now that I can feel her breath fan across my chest.

Like Tess can read my mind - which, let’s be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if she should. What can’t this woman do? - her eyelids flutter open, and they’re bright green - like the moss after a fresh rain - and filled with lust. I reach down to coax her up my body, laying her on my chest so our heads are at the same level. We take a moment to just look into each other’s eyes - having a conversation without speaking - before I bring my lips to hers.

I’ve never felt more alive than with her lips on mine. For some reason, her breath is better than any I intake on my own. The kiss is unhurried and exploratory. I run my tongue across her lips and savour the softness. She places light kisses across my lips, down my neck, and on my chest until she snuggles into me again.

“I’m sorry,” she says, her voice slightly muffled from where her face is pressed into my neck. “I don’t think I can do anything fun with you this morning. I still feel a bit crumby and tired.”

My body tenses before I can stop it. It’s my knee-jerk reaction to Tess even thinking to apologize for not being able to - or wanting to - have sex. Her previous boyfriend was an absolute scumbag, and he better hope we never cross paths.

I may come across as the lighthearted, goofy one of the group, but that doesn’t mean my hands are clean. Years after my sister Kath was rescued from a human trafficking ring, we got a tip of the whereabouts of one of the perps who wasn’t onsite the night of the bust. The guys managed to at least talk me into consulting with Raven’s dad first, so we didn’t go completely rogue, but when he told me that the paperwork already said the man was found deceased, I didn’t hesitate to make that prophecy come true.

Allowing women - people in general - the autonomy over their own bodies and not forcing them to do your sick and twisted bidding is the absolute bare minimum. If people can’t even do that, they don’t deserve to live, in my opinion.
